More and more fiber cables are installed in smaller areas especially in FTTH projects and data centres, those projects require tighter bend radius fiber upto 5milimeter to improve the project quality or density.
The bend insensitive helps the cables in patch panels where they are tightly bent out from suffering the bending loss; allows fiber to be run into the corners; deliveries insurance against problems caused by careless; has additional robustness, simplify installation.
Bend Insensitive Fiber Types and Compatibility:
The bend insensitive single mode fiber has G657A and G657B two types. The drop cable with G657A fiber is used in FTTH deployments where sharp bends are unavoidable in last mile cable installation and compatible with G652 fibers. While the G657B doesn’t compliant with G652 fibers hence it is mainly used in indoor fiber cables installed with field installable optical connectors. The MM bend insensitive fiber is becoming more popular in the horizontal cabling in the FTTZ architecture to shrinking the power loss budget.
The bend insensitive multimode fiber has OM2, OM3, OM4 are claimed fully compliant with installed base of 50-um MM fibers and all relevant industry standards by industry leading suppliers. They claim it only meets all relevant macro bend standards with outstanding bandwidth support, but also set a new level of bend performance. fiber supplier like Corning, Belden, Panduit have done test and claimed the compatibility of bend insensitive MM fiber with standard 50um fibers. Even though due to the different testing standard, the BIMMF compatibility issue is an inconclusive answer , but there is no major reason to not install BIMMF in many applications.
