PLC SPLITTER AND FBT SPLITTER DIFFERENCE

Fiber optic PLC splitter and FBT splitter , which can distribute and combine energy with low cost and high reliability, are widely used in FTTX PON system or network of fiber and coaxial cable for CATV system. They have the same package in steel tubes or ABS modules with bare optical fiber or 0.9mm, 2.0mm, 3.0mm cable as input and output cable, same application.

Difference between FBT splitter and PLC splitters

1, Material and technical:
FBT use welding and aligning the fiber by heating for a specific location and length. Different ratio to be arranged via controlling fiber twist angle and stretching length then take protection with glue and steel tubes . It is easy and utmost to 1×4, over that, need combine several 1×2, so the size over 1×8 usually will be large

PLC splitter use semiconductor technology with three layers: substrate, waveguide and lid . the technical allow the package in small compact size for high density requirement

2, The Wavelength :

FBT splitter only support three wavelengths 850/1310/1550, for the 3×3 FBT splitter, only single window can be available. Not working in other wavelength.

PLC splitter is working the wavelength from 1260-1650nm

3, The splitter ratio:

If uneven splitter ratio or customized splitter ratio is preferred, FBT can accommodate the requirement. And an exact equal ratio is not assured, insertion loss will increase substantially for splitter over 1×8, maximum ratio 1×32 . High splitter ratio precision requirement may choose PLC splitters which can split the signal equally, PLC splitter can reach 1×128. PLC splitter only available with even splitter ratio for all branches.

4, Temperature:

FBT working temperature is from -5~+75 degree, it is susceptible to high insertion loss or failure under extreme temperature or improper handling

PLC splitter has wider working temperature from-40~+85 degree, without much affection on the insertion loss and PLD with higher stability and low failure rate.

 

Now the cost for the both type small ratio splitter is close, FBT splitter is recommended for the application where is not sensitive to wavelength , size and small ratio. For example for the independent data transmission can choose 1310nm FBT splitter, television network can choose 1550 FBT,  in triple play, FTTH projects where need multiple wavelength for large number household, PLC is a preference.
